Streetbeat Active Electronic staff:

Applique Disco, Minimal, Electro   Applique finally abandoned all other genres of music when he came to WNUR in the fall of 2006 to apprentice with DJ Sangre. His show, Rewriteable, started in the winter of 2007 and has since evolved into a bi-weekly review of the best new house releases. Applique and DJ Jaims alternate in the 11 pm Monday slot.

DJ Dolly DeBauche Mash-ups, Electroclash, Electropop, House, Indietronica, Hip-hop   Dolly is the latest inheritor of the Late Show, on a bi-monthly basis. She apprenticed on the Late Show with DJ Stabby from October 2005 to March 2006, where her eclectic tastes were not only encouraged, but cultivated. Coming of age in the glorious nightlife of Miami Beach and South Beach exposed her to all different sorts of electronic music styles and kickstarted her love of a great dance tune. If you just want to hear fun music that is awesome to get your dance on to, and get other things on to, then this is the show for you. You will hear all sorts of things, new and old, from across genres. So explore some different music while she feels out her style. She'll get your monday night party pumping.

Andy Farley
House, Tech-house, IDM, Minimal Apprenticed with Ian Lesperance from March - June 2005. Andy Farley became a DJ because of his severe lack of social/dancing skills. Making terrible electronic music since the 7th grade, his musical tastes have both broadened and deepened with a faster internet connection and compulsive collecting habits. His musical influences vary widely from John Tejada’s minimal techno blips to The Chariot’s brutal hardcore breakdowns. The focus of his show, DropB, is to present music that sounds like Chicago house played through a broken Super Nintendo...or something like that. Andy was also the Streetbeat Electronic Producer from June 2006 - September 2006.

Kevin Greene
House Kevin Greene moved from Los Angeles to Northwestern in Fall of 2005. When he stepped into WNUR, he fell in love with Streetbeat and decided to apprentice on DJ Sangre's show, The Fringe, from September 2005 until March 2006. The station led him to discovering all kinds of electronic music, but Kevin especially fell in love with House. His favorite kinds are club house, disco house, and french house, and he broadcasts this wondeful music on his show, Blended on WNUR FM.

James Hassel aka DJ Jaims
Intelligent Drum N' Bass, UK Garage, Disco House

Jaims has always had a flavor for the forgotten tastes in electronic music. Growing up on an atmospheric drum n' bass foundation, Jaims has added lesser-known genres to his playlists as they peaked during brief stints in the New York scene, including NY garage, speed garage, classic and ragga jungle, and 2-step. In 2001, he began indulging in the UK drill n' bass scene and also developed a liking for IDM. Recently, Chicago has influenced him to spin funky, jazzy, and disco house on a regular basis. He combines all of these styles into his bi-weekly show, Rhythm Mechanics, which first aired March-June 2005 and will continue from September '05-June '06. He apprenticed with the ever talented Roy Shay on BeatChem 110 two quarters prior to his show. DJ Jaims acted as Streetbeat's electronic producer for the 2005 / 2006 and 2006 / 2007 school year and hosted on Monday nights until June 2007.

Jeekoos
Jungle, Breakbeat, Garage, Grime, Dubstep, Dub
Chicago 1998...Jeekoos became actively involved in music by producing hip hop with local artists. With an open mind and heart, he began digging for fresh musical experiences. Shortly before the end of the century, at a party in Rogers Park, he got introduced to jungle and immediately fell in love. In early 2000 he happened upon a jungle and breakbeat-oriented college radio show hosted and mixed by DJ Kee aka Searchl1te. Impressed by his selections of styles and sounds, and glad to have found a consistent source for dnb, Jeekoos became a regular listener. He had been honing his production skills and began sharing some of his original tracks with Searchl1te, who dug them and played them on the show. In late 2001 Jeekoos visited the radio show, which had just taken the name Part Time Sucker Radio. There he met up with the Part Time Suckers, Kee aka Searchl1te, Cringer, and Kat_Zyie. When dubstep caught up with him, with its slower pace but equivalent intensity, gnarly basslines and attention to detail, the incorporation of it into his sets and production style was only natural. As his sound evolves and his skills flourish, Jeekoos stays deeply involved in the Chicago dubstep scene. Respect to tha Wubmaster!
Rocky Jones
Trance, Progressive House, Electro
Rocky spins all types of music as long as it gets his foot tapping. He incorporates many sources of music into his DJ mixes including vinyl, CDs, as well as MIDI instruments and tracks through his Powerbook. A trained classical guitarist for the last 15 years, Rocky likes incorporating forms of improvisation into his sets. He keeps full tracklists and recordings from all his sets on WNUR at rocky-jones.com. If you would are interested in airing a guest mix during his slot, send him an email. Outside the DJ booth, Rocky is suave, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru. Children trust him. He bakes 30 minute brownies in 20 minutes.

James Lauer
House, Progressive
James Lauer spins a wide range of underground house and techno and currently hosts the Diversified Portfolio Radio show alongside an impressive lineup of special guests. The show was started with the help of co-host Andrew Suprenant. As a DJ, James works extremely hard to keep his sound as fresh and diverse as possible and his efforts have consistently earned him bookings at some of the top locations in Chicago as well as a number of other cities around the world. He keeps a full archive of all of his WNUR shows including tracklistings and recorded sets available at JamesLauer.com along with his latest DJ schedule and other antics.

NightDen Funky House, Club House, Breaks, Trance     DJ NightDen started DJing in 2006. Before that he was a relatively accomplished jazz pianist. While he still loves jazz, he got interested in DJing when he discovered how much fun dancing could be. Beginning his exploration of the DJ world with Ableton Live (a computer-based DJ software), he later incorporated CDJ and Turntable techniques into his mixing style in 2007 when he joined StreetBeat on 89.3FM WNUR. He apprenticed with Miwa Takaki & Kevin Greene. He does not limit his sets to any one style, rather he generally selects his tracks based on how much the melodies move him and the danceable quality of the beats. His favorite styles include Funky House, Club House, Breaks, & Trance."

DJ Ohm aka Ohmz aka Recharge aka Richard Chough
House, Breaks

DJ Ohm (Richard Chough) mixes a variety of music including chillout, breaks, house and trance. He has been hosting Cosmic Sound on WNUR since January 2007, formerly known as Full Circle from March through December 2006 after apprenticing with Rocky Jones in Fall 2005 and Sangre in Winter 2006. He currently holds his show on Tuesday nights at 11PM on 89.3FM WNUR-Streetbeat.

DJ Operator   Starting out as a booty house DJ dropping tracks at local YMCA parties, Tom (Operator) took a listen to WNUR and decided that better, electronic music was yet to be found. Joining the Streetbeat staff in the Fall of 1999, Operator apprenticed during his senior year at Evanston Township High School with Sameer, Dave the Slave and David Siska; the latter two accounting for a strong influence of Detroit Techno.

Continuing his commitment to WNUR, DJ Operator held shows every summer from 2000-2005 with one in the Fall of 2001 and regularly subbed for other DJs like it was his job; albeit, a low paying one. When Brendan Cox could not handle to stress of running the Streebeat web site that he designed for a school project, Operator picked up the site to keep Streetbeat on the radar of listeners, record labels and promoters alike.

He is referred to as "the guy with the sexy voice" by the ladies and plays an eclectic blend of techno. Check him out at djop.com for more compelling information.

DJ Sangre
Chicago House
DJ Sangre knew nothing about house music when he moved to Chicago in the Fall of 2003. But as soon as he set foot in it's place of birth, Sangre fell in love with that branch of electronica known as house. Since then he has dedicated his DJing to this addictive genre. He spins everything from spicy latin house to smooth disco house to funky chicago underground to soulful deep house to the screaming club hits of the UK. Known for leaving the booth and dancing with clubgoers, Sangre will play and do whatever he can to take a party to the next level. His favorite labels include: Olive (R.I.P), Soulfuric, Red Hot, Chiltepin Musica, .dotbleep, Defected, OM, and XL. He apprenticed for Ben V from September 2003-June 2004. He got his Streetbeat start while apprenticing for DJ Ohm and now hosts Hellevator Music fortnightly on Wednesdays from 11:30-1:00 am. Sicarii also produces his own music and is the lead singer in the Clovis Points, a Rochester, NY area band.

Turning to electronic music in early 2003, Yann M. began experimenting with DJing, joining the increasingly large international electronic scene. After apprenticing with DJ Razzi on The Thirteenth Hour in 2007, he knew is was time to give his own show a shot.

Strongly influenced by French and Australian electro, Yann M. currently plays house/dance music and remixes, always looking for something to move your body. To find and to share new music is his goal...

Deluge
Political hip-hop, Local Hip-hop, Exclusives

Under and Beyond is an Underground hip-hop radio show that I started in late 2000 at WNUR-FM 89.3 in Chicago

To this day I continue to do the show, and continue to grow and expand Under and Beyond into bigger and better things. The show originally started out as a laizze fairre program consisting of mostly independent and political hip-hop. Now the show has grown into an integration of local Chicago artists with an infusion of new music and the addition of classic/old school hip-hop, while maintaining the dedication to the shows roots.

The show is now broken down into 6 different segments spanning over a 3 hour period:

11pm: The 11 O'Clock Jumpstart consisting of an hours worth of clean/edited hip-hop new and old with a fresh mix of instrumental hip-hop along with political music.

11:30 Showdown This originally started as a concept to put rappers head to head in a battle type setting but eventually I thought that as being counter-productive so it has evolved into a 5-10 minute run down of hip-hop concerts and events in the Chicago area.

12am: Midnight Movement: This is perhaps one of the hottest and freshest segments in radio anywhere. From 12-12:30 every Thursday night/Friday morning only the best new independent hip-hop is spun. Un-cut and Un-censored bangin out world premeirs, exclusive interviews, and breaking previously unheard to the world artists. Since ive always wanted to be in a position to break new music and new artists this serves as the ultimate goal of my show. This is the part of Under and Beyond that I hope everybody tunes into weekly.

Furthermore, I accept material from any hip-hop artist trying to get airplay, however I ask that the music be independent in nature and not follow the bullshit trends on radio or in mainstream life, I dont want to hear about money or cars or gold chains in your music or il throw the CD in the trash and thats how the shit goes.

12:30: Chicago's Finest: At this point we transition from purely new music to a set of independent Chicago artists, there have been a ton of new Chicago artists broke on Chicago's Finest, and before the segment we always opened the door to Chicago artists. We will occasionally do in-studio interviews with some of these artists and that will usually go into the next segment into the 1 O'clock hour

1am Backsmack: Simple, the 1am Backsmack is all about takin people back in the day droppin classics and old school joints mainly from the 80's and early to mid 90's. The hip-hop that I grew up with is always in the mix between 1:00-1:30

1:30am: Finishing Touches: Whatever I missed earlier in the show that I wanted to play but didn't have the time I throw on between 1:30 and 2am to put the finsihing touches on Under and Beyond. Though requests are takin throughout the show, most likely this is the time that I will blend them in At the end of the show the playlists are recapped, and thats it.

Diamonds Hip-hop     Diamonds' first and most distinct memory of hip hop was hearing KRS One's "Sound of the Police" as a pre-schooler during the Los Angeles Riots. Though the political significance of this track went over his head, he immediately developed a love for hip hop as an art form, and later as a social movement. At the center of a vibrant hip hop scene, Diamonds embraced the provocative messages and famous beats of Los Angeles hip hop, developing an affinity for West Coast hip hop as a whole. Thereafter, he expanded his taste to include various artists throughout the nation such as Little Brother and AZ. Diamonds has always tried to communicate the power of hip-hop by exposing its diversity, rotating between a repertoire of classic artists such as Rakim and new talents including Brother Ali. At WNUR, he has been able to further develop his tastes from fellow peers and an electric Chicago hip-hop scene. Given the opportunity to work with apprentices such as DJ Minesweeper and Murder Mandrake, Diamonds has successfully spread his affinity for hip-hop to Northwestern and Chicago at large through the BackBeat Project by strictly playing the most innovate and "hot fire" hip-hop music, producing countless Diamonds in the rough.

Drop6 Hip-hop
Alex came to Northwestern in the fall of 2004 thinking he would be the only one on campus who listened to underground hip-hop. He soon befriended DJ Verbatim (who recently graduated) and was soon apprenticing on his underground hip-hop show "making ends meat" once a week. He finally got FCC certified in the spring and had his own bi-weekly show for all of sophomore year called "The Back Beat Project." Through the network of WNUR he has found many other students who share his love for up and coming rap/hip-hop performers and has grown his collection through associations with a stable of regulars on his show including MC Gurk, Diamonds among many others. Alex looks forward to another successful year in the control room and broadcasting the beat throughout the Chicagoland area.

Jeremy Coutre & Chris Walsh
Electronica

Chris began his professional DJ career playing at some of Chicago's leading clubs including Shelter, Crobar, and Karma. Then in 1998 Chris teamed up with Chicago's leading club promoter, PURE. It was with PURE that Chris' DJ career really began to take off. Chris began to champion the progressive house and tech house sound in the city that gave birth to house music. He soon became a resident DJ for PURE, and played an integral role in pioneering the much loved sound of deep, rich, funky progressive house in Chicago. When he's not playing records in town, Chris is busy DJing overseas in places like Russia, Ibiza and London. Chris has had the opportunity to share the bill with DJ's such as Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman and Pete Tong to name just a few. In 2001, Chris saw his first release “Shake” signed to Sony's Playstation game Grand Theft Auto 3 and HBO's hit series Six Feet Under. Starting his professional career off as an in-house engineer for Mark! Productions, he has since moved on to Chicago music houses BIG Music and Emoto Music. Their first commercial project together was a remix of Stella Nova’s “Quiet Nights” that was released on Uncommon Trax Records. Since then, they have gone on to remix Hipservice’s “Badaboom Badabing” and Group Therapy’s “My Own Worst Enemy” on Dave Seaman’s Audiotherapy Label; the latter of which will be released on the upcoming mix compilation, this is audiotherapy, mixed by Dave Seaman. Recently, they released their own production featuring singer Holly Bavier entitled “Burn”, that was released on SOG Chrome earlier this year, and will be featured on Paul Van Dyk’s Politics Of Dancing 2 in the fall of 2005. Also on SOGChrome, Chris and Jeremy have completed a remix of Nocando’s “Time Will Tell”, and their follow-up single “Done With Love” is due out early next year. Combining their forces with world renowned DJ Dave Ralph, they began composing tracks under the moniker “High Class Hookers”. Their first collaboration, “Outside” was released on Tall Paul’s label, Duty Free Recordings. Since then, they have completed two other tracks that are signed to R-Factor Recordings.

Brendan Cox House     Brendan mentored DJ Skinny and Andrew Luckham and acted as Streetbeat producer. He also designed the previous version of this website.

Drea-D
Psychedelic Trance

drea-D got into the the scene six years ago, after repeatedly claiming that he thought electronic music suked. back in the day, he used to listen to angry white boy music. then one fateful night he discovered psychedelic trance and has been a psyhead ever since. mesmerized by the intelligence and depth of the music he danced for about twelve hours, stopping only to giggle with firends. rubbing shoulders with backpackers from all over the world at the outdoor psychedelic raves of his times, he became a full blown hippie. now psytrance is pretty much the only thing he listens to. nowadays you can see him dancing down Sheridan rd between classes and pining for warmer climates. now and then you might even see him surrounded by fire as he dances with poi to the beat of the drum. any questions about the show or its contents, send an email.

let the psychedelic expereince take you on one hell of a wild ride, to places where other music genres forgot you were ticklish. new psy releases at psyshop.com and info at psynews.org

Smooth, soulful house. Vocal and deep stuff. Thom is German. He has a web site.

His favorite labels include Purpose Maker, Salo, Underground Resistance, and favorite artists include Christian Morgenstern, Robert Hood, and virtually anything to ever come out of Detroit. He hosted the Education By Numbers show on Wednesday nights.

DJJ     Making the belated though much-celebrated switch to Streetbeat, Justin worked as a DJ on WNUR's Rock show from 2002 to 2004. It was during his second year of djing that Justin had an epiphany and realized that the future was in the synthesizer, not the guitar. Using classic Warp material from Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, LFO, Boards of Canada, and Plaid as a launching pad, Justin broadened his tastes in electronic music, expanding his interest in forms such as IDM, ambient techno, drill-n-bass, and micro-house. As skittery beats and micro-bleeps took over his body, a transformation in Justin occurred. Much like the "man-machine" found in cyberpunk literature and the music of Kraftwerk, Justin slowly changed into DJJ, fusing with the digital and technological. Currently, DJJ feels labels such as Kompakt, Playhouse, Ghostly International and Bpitch Control can do no wrong, and preaches that the minimum is the new maximum. You can catch his show every other Thursday, from 12:30 to 2 AM.

Andrew now lives in Minneapolis, MN and hosts a weekly podcast show.

Matt MacQueen
Techno: Detroit, Funky

Matt MacQueen co-hosted the Clinically Inclined show with David Siska on Friday evenings until September 2006. Matt has been orbiting WNUR since 1999, always with an emphasis on mixing brand new music with proper classics. His DJ sets highlight the latest in Detroit-flavored Techno and House, with a strong nod to it's roots; the 70's and 80's classics of the pre-techno era like funk, soul-jazz, Italo disco, new wave and first-generation jackin' Chicago house. Digging deep in the crates, Matt makes a concerted effort to mix a wide variety of funky futuristic grooves from ALL genres and years, in the spirit of Detroit's most inspirational and open-minded radio DJ: Electrifyin' Mojo (AKA - Charles Johnson, respect!).

You'll hear future/past sounds on labels like: Metroplex, Sound Signature, Transmat, Buzz, UR, Loft/Garage Classics, Red Planet, Warp, 2000 Black, Soul Jazz, A.R.T., Trax, Environ, DJ International, B12, Peacefrog, M-plant, Delsin, Basic Channel, KMS, Rush Hour, Prelude, West End, Fragile, DJ International, Stax, Planet E, Archive, Emoticon, deFocus, KDJ, Prescription, Axis, Clone, R&S, Viewlexx, Network, Music For Speakers, Seventh City, downLow, Fuzz Dance... plus brand new/emerging labels worldwide.

DJ Nho Techno, Ghetto-tech       Apprenticed for David Siska around 1997.

nickd
Techno, Tech House, Progressive, 4/4 k-wackosityomfg

I run Hijacked on Tuesdays. To my knowledge, Hijacked is Chicago's only radio-based mash-up between techno, electro, progressive, deep tech-house, and ridiculously hard drill 'n bass played at -50% pitch, uh, on a frequency between 88.7 and 91.5. Yeah, you bet you fear it!

My biggest inspirations have absolutely nothing to do with electronic music - they mostly have to do with stupid crap like pretty sunsets and forests and driving down Chicago late at night - so I won't go into them here. Go figure, right?

nickd acted as Streetbeat music director and designed this website.

Noomenon aka Graham B Lippsmith Hard Techno   Noomenon hosted a show on Wednesday nights until June 1999. He acted as WNUR's Program Director from September 1998 till June 1999 and mentored m50 and Jeff Seelbach (who went on to become the Music Director for the Rock format). He currently resides in Los Angeles and does a weekly live mix on WCKS.

NVS aka Stabby
House, Downtempo, Mash-ups, Bastard-ness, Poppy Stuff

The latest Late Show host DJ Stabby draws on influences ranging from Sigur Ros to Naoki Maeda, but his biggest influences are Kid606, 2 Many DJs, and of course DJ Skinny and DJ Zolphin, who taught him everything he knows. His favorite labels are Tigerbeat6, Ninja Tune, Cityrockers, !K7, Warp, Definitive Jux, Ghostly International (Ann Arbor, what?!) and Astralwerks. In short, he’s a masher.

Are you tired of having to choose between vapid euro pop tarts and soulless monotonous dubs in your dance music? Wish deep techno had more hot vocalists? Wonder how Erol Alkan keeps getting work despite having a Uwe Boll-like remix resume? Do you think indie hip-hop and Wal-Mart country are not mutually exclusive? Kevan Beecham     Time Travel primarily exist with three goals in mind; 1)entertaining the listener with creative and interesting music, 2)educating the listener about the music, the artists, and all the innerworkings of the culture that helped give birth to them, & 3)achieve the first two goals while maintaining a theme of public responsibility & honesty. Since our existence on WNUR 89.3 FM we've exposed the listener to a vast array of virtually unknown artists or rare music from more known artists while also providing a forum for a extensive listing of artists to express their views and music histories. Beyond that, we've done a wide variety of concept show where we've tried to capture the essence of various aspects of the culture (ex: the art of DJing, the human beat box, a 18 week Hip Hop choronology lesson, orgins of the most popular Hip Hop samples, etc....). All in all, Time Travel exist in the present using information from the past to continue to preserve Hip Hop's future...
